Sporting Fashion

What better season than summer to be an Outdoor Girl? Over the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, women outfitted themselves for increasingly active lives — in the sun, sand, and surf, on the tennis courts and the baseball fields. Women wanted clothes that were functional without sacrificing beauty or propriety. Join Jennifer Farley Gordon, Ph.D. on a tour of Sporting Fashion: Outdoor Girls, 1800-1960. The tour will highlight the evolution of summer sportswear worn for women’s leisure activities and sporting pursuits. Dr. Gordon is an independent fashion historian and co-curated the 2011 exhibition Sporting Life at The Museum at FIT.
