My work in this exhibition was made in the last two months in response to my recent and first trip to Europe. The faces and places were familiar, known and unknown, confronting me directly and relentlessly without context or footing.
The title of the new work The Hypnopompic Journal refers to the intensity of the experience combined with the recollection and defining of the incalculable encounters with art, architecture, and sketchy communications reminiscent of that beautiful and confusing image-laden time between dream and wakefulness. It is a world that is pictorial and spatial, and the people move from the wall to the surrounding crowd in a story-world that is the only place they can exist.
